Many extended families aren’t currently able to spend time together in-person these days. That doesn’t mean Mother’s Day is cancelled or on hold. In fact, it may just be more important than ever. And it’s only 10 days away! Depending on where you live you may not be able to go out to shop for a gift, but I’ve put together a list of high-tech gifts moms would love — and you should be able to order these online.
Twinkly LED Lights
I reviewed the Twinkly multi-color RGB smart LED lights just in time for Christmas, and these things put on quite a show. They can be very “smart” including mapping of lights and customization using a smartphone, but they can also put on a show simply by using the integrated pushbutton controller.
Twinkly also sells warm white and metallic options that are waterproof and ideal for indoor and outdoor decor, year-round.
Nanoleaf Canvas smart lighting makes a great gift because there are multiple elements to it. There’s the fully functional smart lighting aspect — Wi-Fi connectivity, programmable, downloadable scenes, and voice assistant-compatible.
But Nanoleaf Canvas is different. Its a series of square, flat, wall tiles that interlock to create designs. They’re touch sensitive. They even have an integrated audio sensor to pulse to the beat of music. Check out my review if you want to learn more.
The Nanoleaf Smarter kit goes for $199.99 and includes nine light squares, plus everything needed for the coolest light show in the house.
Mophie Powerstation Go
A portable power station makes a great gift for anyone. The $159.95 Mophie Powerstation Go is sleek, stylish, and the perfect size to fit in the glovebox of mom’s car.
No mere power bank, this one has the capacity to fully charge a smartphone multiple times using its integrated Qi wireless charge pad, or USB-A ports. It even has a built-in AC outlet to plug in a laptop. On the safety side, there’s an integrated LED flashlight, and the ability to jumpstart a car — jumper cables included, and instructions printed right on the cloth carrying bag.
I recently reviewed the Mophie Powerstation Go if you’d like to learn more about his stylish and capable power station.
Jaybird VISTA True Wireless Earbuds
If mom could use some new true wireless earbuds, check out Jaybird’s VISTA — especially if she likes to listen to music while exercising.
These true wireless earbuds sound great, they’re extraordinarily comfortable, fit securely — even during the most vigorous workout — and the EarthProof design meets U.S. Military standards for use in harsh environments. Sweat, rain and snow are no match for VISTA.
They come with a super stylish, slim charge case and offer six-hour battery life on a charge. The $179.99 VISTA earbuds come in multiple colors, including this unique, special edition Planetary Green.
Aura Digital Photo Frame
Digital photo frames are always a great gift idea for Mothers Day. This year, being able to share photos of family and friends is even more special.
I reviewed the Aura back in 2017, and it remains the premium choice, thanks to a beautiful iPad-like display, and stylish frame options.
Aura continues to add new features to its software on a regular basis, and the company has released a series of new frame options (look for a review of the latest coming soon). One of these would be a gift your mom will treasure. At time of writing when special prices were being offered on select models, Aura digital photo frames started at $179.
Frameo Digital Photo Frame
Frameo offers an interesting alternative. The company makes the software that runs on digital photo frames, and has partnered with a range of companies selling frames though Amazon and Walmart (and additional outlets globally).
Frameo’s software is very well regarded, with an average 4.6-star rating on Google Play and a 4.8-star rating on Apple’s App Store. Software is going to have a huge effect on the usability of a digital photo frame, controlling everything from how photos (and videos) are uploaded, to how they are displayed, and how they can be shared. It’s the key to staying connected.
In addition to feature-rich and easy to use software, Frameo’s approach offers the advantage of choice in frames. It’s not just color or style, but also size, resolution, and price. The constant is the software for controlling and interacting with the device.
I have several sample digital frames running the Frameo software on hand for evaluation — including 15.6-inch Full HD whopper — so stay tuned for a hands-on review of Frameo.
KIZIK is a shoe brand you may not have heard of, but that will change. The company specializes in high-tech, hands-free shoes. They slide on effortlessly — no bending, no reaching to adjust, and no touching. Just step into them. Yet they stay firmly in place, and offer all the support of a regular shoe.
I reviewed a pair of KIZIK shoes earlier this year, and I still think they are genius. My wife loves them, as does my mother-in-law. They are not just effortless to put on, they are extremely comfortable. At time of publication, women’s KIZIK shoes are on sale starting at $59.00, and the company offers a 15% discount on your first order if you sign up for their email list. They’d make a great Mother’s Day gift…
Kobo Libra H2O
The Kobo Forma remains my top pick as a premium eReader (at least for those not invested in Amazon Kindle eBooks), but the company makes a slightly smaller and more affordable model that would make an ideal Mother’s Day gift for an avid reader.
The Kobo Libra H2O offers the same form factor as the Forma, but with a 7-inch display. It’s thin and light (weighing just 6.8 ounces), offers ComfortLight PRO adjustable screen lighting color temperature, and features Kobo’s TypeGenius text customization. Borrowing library eBooks is easy — right from the device — thanks to Kobo’s integrated OverDrive integration.
The Libra H2O is waterproof, and its price is an affordable $169.99, without any onscreen advertising.
Crosley Cruiser Deluxe
If mom is showing some interest in playing records, the Crosley Cruiser Deluxe is a popular option for trying out old-school analog music.
This all-in-one record player has everything needed including a turntable, speakers, a headphone jack, and even Bluetooth wireless connectivity. All packed in a retro-inspired suitcase that can be closed up and carried. The $69.95 Cruiser Deluxe is offered in a variety of stylish colors, including Mint (as shown), Teal, and White Sand.
Fluance RT80 Turntable
Fluance (the company behind my top-pick RT85 turntable) has a great option for moms who are a little more serious about their record collection.
The Fluance RT80 is a 2-speed, belt drive turntable with an integrated pre-amplifier, and an Audio Technica AT91 cartridge. At time of writing it was reduced to $169.99 from its usual $199.99 price. Combine it with a pair of the company’s 70-watt Ai40 powered 5-inch bookshelf speakers (also $199.99) for a capable and compact sound system. Mom can then enjoy her vinyl in high fidelity, true stereo, and even stream her favorite playlist using Bluetooth.
